If I could afford it, I would totally do this, but I'll pass it on in case someone else can :) Just so you guys know, they've also clarified that it isn't just a percentage of this going to PP, it would be the entire amount.

Join us in standing up for reproductive health and education. Planned Parenthood, the organization that delivers reproductive health care, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide, has come under fire in the U.S. lately, with many politicians on both state and federal level seeking to end funding (and in a few cases succeeding).

During the month of May, you can send a specially designed Planned Parenthood vgift to your friends to help support this cause. (And if you need someone to send it to, [livejournal.com profile] frank is always happy to receive gifts!) There are three variations ($1, $5 and $10) for you to choose from, but they'd all look good on your profile when your friends know that you stand by something so important.

Thank you all for your help in our support for Planned Parenthood. This promotion ends June 1, 2012; LiveJournal is not affiliated with Parent Parenthood. For more information about Planned Parenthood, please visit: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/

I have to admit that this sort of thing really irks me when you compare reproductive health/facilities in the US to the UK.

Granted I'm not super-informed about the differences but from what I have seen we have it much easier over here when it comes to choices for women & men and their sexual/reproductive health.
Main example - we don't have to pay for oral contraceptives/depo-shots/emergency contraceptives etc. Even condoms can be picked up free from some health clinics.
I think it's much more sensible to provide that sort of thing for free (or for a reasonable cost) rather than the state having to help you out long-term from the things that might happen if you're not educated etc.

I have some lj-tokens left so i'll be sending you a v-gift of one of the above. :D

I haven't visited a Planned Parenthood myself (yet), but from what I understand, they're very similar! And they're the only alternative we really seem to have, at least that is as widespread and well-known as Planned Parenthood. One visit to a gyno for me a couple years ago cost almost $300, and that wasn't including the birth control they put me on that cost something like $30 a month. I'm sure there are even cheaper alternatives, but PP is by far the best. Which, of course, is why they're being attacked so hardcore -_-

I've considered moving to Canada in the past, as it's very near where I live already - I think they have health care that's really similar to what you've described!

My friend just moved to Toronto to be with her fiance and she says it's sort of a mixup of US and UK but more like the UK from what she can figure out lol.

I think if I were to ever consider moving to the US the healthcare thing would be a big bump for me to consider as I like that I don't have to worry about insurance or being able to pay hospital bills etc... we don't have them at all unless we go private. (Exception being you pay for prescriptions other than contraceptives, and dental/optical treatments but it's all discounted).
If I'm remembering rightly you're in a sort of similar situation to me regarding needing the birth control for reasons as well as/other than actual birth control - lol. I take it atm b/c it's free and helps SO much with the womanly crap I (we) have to put up with.

$30/month is like, £20/month, which would buy you about 18-24months of the pills I take if they were on paid prescription (I get 6months of them at a time on one prescription.) I can't believe they charge that much as they much cost a tiny amount to actually produce. Drug companies have way too much power over that I think.

Vgift finally sorted... my internet is really annoying me tonight!

This is a global threat. Planned parenthood is being defunded here in France as well, although there are few direct attacks on right-to-choose. The result is the same.
Women are already first in line in this economy with part-time and low-paid jobs. Makes me want to scream, really.

*hugs*

I think some parts of PP are great, in that they give out condoms/other birth control, and educate on safe sex practices, and provide preventative healthcare to communities on a sliding scale. But I do not support that some PP clinics perform abortions. I'm on the fence about supporting them.

I'm very much pro-choice, so that's actually part of why I support them. But if it helps, from what I understand, abortions only constitute 3% of what they offer, and it's also one of the only things they offer that must be paid for by the patient - so anything donated wouldn't be contributing to that service anyway, but would be contributing to other services that are also deeply necessary for many, many women (including myself, eventually), and men :)
