My dad bought me a Kindle O_________O
I'd been thinking of getting one soon, or asking for one for Christmas, so that I could take advantage of the free books available, and put fanfic on it to read, because staring at a computer so much is seriously killing my eyes. So yay! I only even mentioned it once to my mom in passing, but I guess she suggested it XD I couldn't believe it when she gave it to me, I thought it was some kind of joke!
I've had time to play with it today because I'm not sure at all what to do for my homework, lol. The way our weeks are set up, we start with discussion questions, then our next assignment is usually brainstorming and concept development for whatever we're working on each week (this week it's a newspaper ad), and then our last assignment for the week is our final version. Well, for our concept development this week, my teacher wanted us to kind of go all out; basic market research to determine our target audience and what would appeal most to them (the answers on that questionnaire I linked really came in handy there, thank you!), more research into other newspaper ads for whatever would be considered the competition with critiques of each one, 40-50 thumbnail sketches of layout ideas, and then we had to work up 3 of our thumbnails into digital mock-ups.
Well, being the overachiever I apparently am, instead of doing digital mock-ups, I just full on completed all three the way I was imagining them. I swear, I do this in every class I take like this -______- It's not a bad thing, really, except that everyone who critiqued my assignment only had good things to say, and nobody offered any negative things or any suggestions for improvement! So I guess I'm just going to pick one of the ones I finished and turn it in again, and hope that that's okay, since I'm not sure what else to do XD That's been considered acceptable in the other classes I've taken, so I hope it is in this one!
I stayed up all night watching movies. I thought The Evil Dead was kind of dumb, and of course there was a scene towards the end that would've traumatized me had I not whipped my headphones off and curled into the fetal position to hide from my screen, but supposedly the sequels are way better, so I only watched it for that. I watched a German film named Everyone Else that was alright. Then was Aimee & Jaguar, which was AMAZING. Another German movie, and this one was about a woman who was married to a German soldier, and has an affair with a Jewish woman in 1943. I really, really loved it. And Maria Schrader, who played the Jewish woman, is GORGEOUS, omg. I was starstruck by her the entire time. After that, I watched The Last Song, which caused me to question AGAIN why anyone reads Nicholas Sparks books/watches the movies, since they all end in similarly depressing ways. I like The Notebook ;_; But that's about it, really~

I keep trying to decide if I want one. Not that I have the money for it, but maybe I'd read more books if I did.

I had been waffling about it too, and definitely couldn't afford it, which was why I planned to ask for it for Christmas in the hopes that maybe I wouldn't have to buy it myself, hehe. It's amazing how much classic lit and non-fiction you can find for free, basically everything! I've been downloading PDF's of books for awhile (and firefox has an ePub reader add-on), but reading on my computer screen is just too much :/ If you can afford $79 at any point for the one I got (which I THINK is the cheapest right now? I'm not sure though), I would recommend it! Maybe closer to Christmas it'll even be on sale - if it helps, I know they sell them at Staples, because that's where my dad got mine, and Staples is probably more likely to have them on sale than Amazon :)

Seems to me, they both keep updating features to stay competitive, so what it might amount to is--do you want to use it for more than just reading?
I have an iphone, which holds all of my music and allows me to check email/twitter/etc. and I'm not a big game player, so yes--I only need it for reading. But it would be nice to read books and fanfic on an e-reader; I can't always get comfortable with my laptop.

The Kindle will read PDF/.doc/.docx/.rtf/.html files, and it gives you an email address so that you can email your files to your device without having to plug it in, so fanfic will definitely work on it, that's something I plan on using it for too! I'm pretty sure the Nook is good for all of this, too - I was originally planning on asking for the Nook, but I'm not disappointed with the one I got at all :)

I agree with you about all the distractions. As far as ease of reading, I'm wondering if I want a back lit screen? Sometimes when I'm reading a book, I can't seem to get enough light on the pages. As far as fanfic goes, everything I read is at one website or another--do you mean I can email myself a link? Just making sure I understand you properly.
While I've not actually bothered to try any of them out, I know Best Buy will soon be carrying both Nook and Kindle, so I can give 'em a test drive side by side. I did find more good reviews from Kindle users, partly because of the built in 3G and apparently you can download books overseas with a Kindle. Not that I'm traveling anytime soon, sadly LOL
Overall the Nook seems more expensive, and the new Kindle seems to be competing with the ipad.

It's sort of like saving a link, but not exactly! You could do it a few different ways. To start with, most fic archives have links somewhere where you can either "download" the page, or view it as a printable page (for example, THF has the printable option). If you can download it, you might be able to choose the filetype, and then you're done, all you'd have to do is transfer it to your reader!
Otherwise, the printable page is usually helpful because it will open the entire story onto one page (so you don't have to go chapter by chapter, which is sooooo tedious for this), and from there, you can either right-click anywhere on the page and select to save the page as a web page or HTML file, or you can select all the text, copy it into a Word editor, and save it from there as any of those file types I listed above.
The one I got isn't the one with 3G, but I adore it anyway :) It does have wifi, that was all I needed! It also isn't one of the ones with a touch screen, but I don't really care for touch screens. My phone and ipod have that, and it was nifty at first, but I think the novelty has worn off and I find myself very glad that my phone also has a keyboard XDDD I like buttons!

Touch screen isn't that important to me either. Mostly I want to make sure I can read whatever/whenever I want. ;)
Thanks for all the info!! <33
